sushi cake

Sushi Cake ~ Pastel de Sushi
Sushi Cake is a favorite in my family and among my children's friends. I think it has to do with it being served cold. This recipe is based on California Roll, and I first tasted this cake about 10 years ago, but couldn't find the recipe. My cousin explained how to do it, but I am kind of a step by step cook, so when I got the exact amounts wrote it down... here it is!

Ingredients ~ Ingredientes
Have ingredients and ring pan ready before layering the cake.

Guillermo (Guille), my son, helped me this time... He was a great chef and model ;) ~ Mi hijo,  Guillermo (Guille) me ayudó está vez...

Everytime you finish adding a rice layer, firmly press to the bottom so that it will be compact and will not crumble when cut.

Press rice to the bottom ~ Presiona el arroz al fondo
Spread avocado, and clean the sides. ~ Unta el aguacate, y limpia los costados.

I love Avocado ~ Me encanta el Aguacate
Nori sheets can be toasted to add flavor.

Guille is a fast learner ~ Guille aprende rápido
Cucumber is next, make sure you cover all the Nori ~ Sigue el Pepino, asegúrate que cubras toda la Alga Nori

Seedless cucumber ~ Pepino sin semillas
More rice... ~ Más arroz...

Don't forget to press firmly and wet your hands ~ No se te olvide presionar al fondo y mojar tus manos
For best results, have Cream Cheese at room temperature.

This is looking good, Guille! ~ Esto se ve bueno, Guille!
More Nori... don't you love those things?? ~ Más Alga Nori... no te encantan esas cositas??

Cut Nori sheets with scissors ~ Corta las Algas Nori con tijeras
If you don't like Surimi (Imitation Crab) you can use cooked Shrimp, smoked Salmon or whatever you like...

Last Rice layer ~ Ultima capa de Arroz

Press firmly! ~ Presiona firmemente!

Press... ~ Presiona...
Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate... you can press again, I've seen chefs in Sushi Bars press rice, so it's OK to do so...

Thanks for your help, Guille! ~ Gracias por tu ayuda, Guille!
